What Are Steak Fries?

Steak fries are a type of French fry. They are typically larger and thicker than standard French fries, hence the name “steak” fries. Steak fries can be prepared in a variety of ways, including frying or baking. When baked, they can be a healthier alternative to traditionally fried French fries.

Choosing the Right Potatoes

Russet potatoes are our top choice. They’re large, which makes them ideal for cutting into thick wedges. More importantly, russets have a high starch content, which makes them fluffy on the inside and crisp up nicely on the outside when baked. Yukon Gold potatoes can also be used for steak fries. They’re a bit denser and creamier than russets, so while they won’t be quite as fluffy on the inside, they will still be very tasty. Avoid waxy varieties, as they won’t get as crispy or fluffy when baked. Choose larger potatoes. They’re easier to cut into thick, long wedges.

Ingredients

Potatoes – Large russets. Olive oil – For coating the potatoes. Seasonings – Salt, pepper, onion powder and garlic powder.

How to Cut Potatoes for Steak Fries

If you are using large potatoes, which we recommend, each potato should be cut into 12 wedges. First, cut the potato in half lengthwise. Then, again cutting lengthwise, slice each half into two pieces. Finally, slice each quarter into three even wedges.

Instructions

These homemade steak fries are about as easy as you can get. Prep the steak fries: Cut each potato into twelve equal wedges. Toss them in a large bowl with olive oil and seasonings. Arrange: Place the steak fries on a parchment paper lined baking sheet in a single layer, allowing space between each fry. Bake: Bake in an oven preheated to 425°F for 20 minutes. Flip, then cook an additional 15-20 minutes to your desired doneness. Serve: Serve immediately as part of a meal, or with your favorite dipping sauce.

Recipe Notes and Tips

How to Store and Reheat Leftovers

Allow the fries to cool completely to room temperature. Refrigerate in an airtight container for 4-5 days. Reheat in an oven preheated to 450°F for 5-10 minutes. While you can reheat them in the microwave, they will come out soggy.

What to Serve with Homemade Steak Fries

Of course fries are the classic side dish for burgers. But we love them with so many things! They’re great with just about any kind of sandwich, like a Reuben or Shrimp Po’ Boy. Serve them up with any of your favorite cookout or party food mains like BBQ Chicken, BBQ Ribs, Shish Kebabs, Chicken Skewers, or Chicken Wings. Some other pairing ideas are Chili, Steak Bites, or Carbonnade Flamande, a Flemish beef stew traditionally served with fries. So there you go, one easy, delicious, versatile, and budget friendly side dish or snack. Don’t you wish you had been making your own homemade steak fries all along?
