What is Salisbury Steak

Salisbury steak is a Ground Beef patty with binders and seasonings, which gets seared and then cooked in a savory mushroom gravy. Rather than an actual steak, we would more describe it as a giant disk shaped meatball! The recipe was first developed by American physician James Salisbury in the 1800’s. Promoting a meat centered diet for health, Dr. Salisbury recommended this dish as a treatment for ailments. While modern nutritionists would surely scoff at calling it health food, it’s still a super satisfying meal that has endured for many years.

Ingredients for Salisbury Steak

Beef Patty

Ground beef Binders – Egg and panko. Seasonings – Ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt and pepper.

Gravy

Butter Flour Veggies – Onion and mushrooms. Beef broth Seasonings – Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt, pepper, kitchen bouquet (optional)

How to Make Salisbury Steak

First, mix the ground beef with the binders and seasonings. Divide this mixture into four or five portions and shape into flat, oval shaped patties. TIP: Make sure to form the patties such that the edges are thicker than the center. This will help prevent them from becoming spherical, and ensure more even cooking. Heat some oil in a skillet over medium high heat. Add the beef patties and sear 3-4 minutes per side. Remove them to a plate. In the same pan, add onion and cook till it starts to become translucent. Then add the mushrooms and cook till they begin to soften up. Reduce heat to medium, then add in the butter. Once it has melted and become hot, stir in the flour to make a roux. Gradually add the beef broth, stirring as you go to avoid lump. Stir in the rest of the gravy ingredients. Add the beef patties back in and cover with gravy. Cook till gravy has thickened and the meat patties are cooked. Serve immediately. Want to try a fun twist on this dish? Cook our Hawaiian Loco Moco!

How to Serve Salisbury Steak

The most common way to serve these gravy drenched patties is along with Mashed Potatoes. That being said, Salilsbury steak also goes great with rice or egg noodles. We also like to have some green veggies on the side. Our top contender would be Green Beans Almondine, but peas, broccoli or even a salad would go nicely.

Can I Make Salisbury Steak with Other Meats?

Certainly. A 50/50 mixture of ground beef and ground pork are a great option. We can see ground lamb also working well with this recipe. If you prefer to avoid red meats, you can also make Salisbury steak out of ground turkey or chicken. Just look for something with no less than 10% fat content, as the patties can become dried out.

Leftovers and Storage

Leftover Salisbury steak can be refrigerated in an airtight container for 3-4 days. Simply reheat over medium low heat on stovetop, flipping the patty a few times while it heats up. It can also be frozen, again in an airtight container, for 2-3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating. This week, bypass the frozen dinner aisle and cook this generational favorite from scratch in your own kitchen. It’s an easy weeknight dinner option that will make your mouth water.
