Apples – My favorite apples for these crispy chips are Gala apples, but you can use whatever you have on hand. Cinnamon & Nutmeg – Ground cinnamon and ground nutmeg are classic spices for that amazing fall flavor that works so well with apples. Oil – You can use any kind of full-fat cooking oil here, but I love making this apple chip recipe with coconut oil.
How to Make This Recipe
How do I store cinnamon apple chips?
Once the apple chips have fully cooled to room temperature, you can store them in an airtight container or zip loc bag to keep them fresh. They’ll stay crispy for a few days, but they’re best eaten within the first day or two.
Tips for Success
Use a mandolin. A mandoline slicer is a faster and more efficient tool than a knife for slicing apples into very thin slices. It will also ensure your slices are the same thickness, which will help them cook evenly. Coring apples. Remove the seeds, or the core, from the apple slices easily with a small metal object like the round end of a piping tip.
Substitutions and Variations
Make them sweeter. As apples have a natural sweetness, you don’t need any added sugar here. If you’re making these apple chips for a snacking dessert, you can add the extra sugar to satisfy that sweet tooth! A pinch of brown sugar over the tops will make them even more indulgent. Try other types of apples. Use whichever kind of apples you prefer. Pink Lady, Fuji, and Honeycrisp apples have a sweeter flavor than other kinds. Tart apples like Granny Smith would also work well, especially if you’re planning to add sugar. Softer varieties like McIntosh apples won’t hold their shape as well, so try to avoid these. Use other spices. Try other spices or flavors with these apple chips to suit your preference. Add some ginger or cardamom for a different flavor profile.
