Sweet peas slathered in creamy white sauce, sprinkled with pearl onions. That’s it. No bake it, no slave for it. Perfect side dish contender for your holiday table. Yes those grandmas knew best and nailed it right… 🙂 This side dish is really quick. I can make it in under 20 minutes, even while the turkey and other dishes are in the oven. Sometimes, I make it a couple of days in advance and just reheat it before serving. It works perfectly! All you need is some pretty basic pantry staples and pearl onions. 🙂 I am sure Jason wouldn’t mind if I skip them. But even he is a happy camper with this one, as according to him it’s so easy to weed them out compared to chopped onions. Anyways, I will give you some other variations later. Read on…
Ingredients Needed
Peas – You can use frozen, canned or even fresh. In the case of fresh peas, you just need to cook them till soft. We are going with frozen and just thawing them before. Pearl onions – Frozen or jarred, again we are using frozen. Cream – You can use milk for a lighter version. Butter Flour Salt, pepper and sugar Chives (optional) – For garnishing.
Classic Creamed Peas Recipe
Basically, this dish is just peas and onions in a creamy white or béchamel sauce. I start by melting butter in a pan, then sauté the pearl onions for a few minutes. After that, I add the peas and give everything a stir for about a minute. I spoon in the flour and stir it for a minute to smooth out any lumps. Then I gradually pour in the cream, stirring the whole time to keep it smooth. Next, I season with salt, pepper, and a little sugar to taste. I let it cook for two to three minutes until the sauce thickens nicely. Hmm… yum. I dish it out and garnish with some fresh chives… Easy peasssyyyyy!! 🙂
