Air Fryer French Toast

I’m an equal opportunity French toast maker. I love Oven-Baked French Toast, cut into French toast sticks, as Banana Baked French Toast, Pumpkin French Toast, as French toast casserole … and I really love it when it’s easy. This toddler breakfast recipe, which gets made in the air fryer with less than 5 minutes of cooking time, is one of our favorites. We love using this method to make French toast sticks, since they fit so well in the air fryer we have, and also because they’re a fun breakfast for the kids. This breakfast option works well with a side of fruit and maple syrup—or you can do nut butter, yogurt, or applesauce as a dip. Anything goes, so customize it as you like. (You may also like to use your air fryer to make Air Fryer Roasted Carrots and my Air Fryer Apples.)

Wheat bread: Sandwich or loaf, or you can use another type you like such as Texas toast or challah. It’s better if it’s a little bit stale or sturdy. Eggs: I use large eggs in this recipe. Milk: Any type of milk works. I use whole milk, as I like the richness, but use what you prefer. Nondairy milk can work, too. Vanilla extract: I typically use pure vanilla extract, as I like the flavor, but imitation can work if that’s what you have. Cinnamon: A nice dose of cinnamon adds flavor to this French toast recipe. Maple syrup and diced fruit (optional): Add any dips, toppings, or sides that your family enjoys.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Here’s a look at how to make the breakfast recipe so you know what to expect. Scroll down to the end of the post for the full information and specifics.

How to Store

Store leftover Air Fryer French Toast in an airtight storage container in the fridge for up to 5 days or place into a freezer bag and remove as much air as possible. Freeze for up to 6 months. Pop into the toaster (from the fridge or freezer) to warm through, or you can warm up on a heat-safe plate in 15- to 30-second increments in the microwave.

Best Tips for Success

Use a sturdy bread like sourdough, wheat bread, Texas toast, challah, or a slightly stale bread. It can be sliced sandwich bread or sliced from a loaf. Cinnamon-Sugar French Toast Sticks: Stir together 1 tablespoon sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon in a small bowl. Sprinkle over sticks as soon as they’re finished cooking. Egg-free: Use ½ cup mashed ripe banana or applesauce to replace the eggs. Dairy-free: Use a favorite nondairy milk. Offer as a baby-led weaning breakfast or for older kids to pick up and dip as they like.
